(Yes, we did make a quick decision to go sledding right before dinner one night even though it was dark! According to a very smart man, "The snow is white and reflects light so once we get on the hill we'll be fine." And we were.)
The ice skating was more 'pre-meditated' than the sledding. Grandma was kind enough to watch the two youngest while the rest of us went during nap time -- and Grandpa took our car to the shop. (It was quite the trip for us!) Anyhow, I was proud of my kids. Ice skating was definitely out of Sarah's comfort zone, but she was a trooper and got out there and skated! Katherine and I had gone to one of her friends' winter ice skating show and enjoyed it. After watching so many skaters at so many levels (beginner to professionals literally), we were eager to see what we could do. Not much! But we all picked up some new fun skills.
